Toshiba Sells Power Storage System With World's Highest Output Power
Toshiba Corp announced Nov 26, 2013, that it has received an order for a 40MW power storage system for the "Project to Test Storage Battery System for Dealing With Frequency Fluctuations at West Sendai Transformer Substation," which is conducted by Tohoku-Electric Power Co Inc.
The power storage system will be installed at a transformer substation of a bulk power system. It will have a higher output power than any other power storage system in the world.
The system will use lithium-ion (Li-ion) rechargeable batteries and have an output power of 40MW and capacity of 20MWh. The "SCiB" battery cell, which is manufactured by Toshiba and uses lithium titanate as a negative-electrode material, was employed for the system. The company claims that the cell can handle 10,000 or more charge/discharge cycles and has a high safety and low-temperature properties.
The power storage system will be installed at the West Sendai Transformer Substation of Tohoku-Electric Power. It will be used for dealing with frequency fluctuations caused by wind and solar power generation systems, whose output powers fluctuate depending on weather conditions.
