The image quality of Japan Display Inc's new reflective color LCD panel impressed many visitors to FPD International 2013, which took place from Oct 23 to 25, 2013, in Yokohama, Japan.
"Despite the fact that it is a reflective panel, it has a high image quality and seems to be ready for use," a visitor said.
A reflective panel features a slim body, light weight and low power consumption because it does not require backlight. But it is difficult to ensure high brightness and contrast with a reflective panel, and an image displayed on it becomes opaque. As a result, reflective panels have not been widely used.
Some researchers are proposing methods that are based on a new principle and eliminate the need for color filter and polarizing plate to improve brightness and contrast. But they have not been employed so far because they complicate panel structure and manufacturing process.
This time, Japan Display developed the reflective color LCD panel with a drastically improved image quality without changing the display principle and the commonly-used structure that uses a color filter and polarizing plate. Though the company did not disclose the details of the technology, it said that it improved image quality by making changes to optical design and materials.
The specifications of the new panel are as follows.
Screen size: 7 inches
Pixel count: WUXGA (1,920 x 1,200)
Color scale: 6 bits per color
Color gamut: 30% on NTSC standards
Contrast ratio: 30:1
