Sony Corp announced a compact digital camera that works together with devices such as smartphones.

The camera, "Cyber-shot DSC-TX300V," features a wireless power transmission capability and a wireless data communication function. It is possible to charge the battery of the camera and transmit image data just by placing the camera on a cradle that comes with the camera. The DSC-TX300V also supports wireless LAN, and image data can be directly transmitted to a personal computer, smartphone, etc.

Though there is no manufacturer's suggested retail price, Sony expects that the retail price of the camera will be about ¥50,000 (approx US$656). The camera is scheduled to be released March 9, 2012.

In addition to the wireless power transmission and wireless LAN functions, the DSC-TX300V supports the "TransferJet" close-proximity wireless transfer technology and GPS (including logging function). Furthermore, it is water-proof to 5m and dust-proof and has a low-temperature resistance.

The DSC-TX300V is equipped with the "Exmor R," a newly-developed back-illuminated CMOS image sensor with a pixel count of 18.2 million, and the "Bionz" image processing engine. It has an optical 5x zoom lens with a focal length of 26-130mm (35mm film equivalent) and a bent optical system. The front side of the camera is made by using a strengthened glass board.

Image data transmitted to smartphone

When the DSC-TX300V is used with a smartphone, images stored in the camera can be viewed on the smartphone by using the wireless LAN function, and pictures can be downloaded from the camera to the smartphone. To use a smartphone in this way, it is necessary to install "PlayMemories Mobile," an application software developed by Sony, on the smartphone. The software supports both Android and iOS.
