[FPDI] New Polarization Plate Cuts Power Consumption of LCD Panel
Teijin DuPont Films Japan Ltd announced a polarization plate that improves the use efficiency of LCD panel's backlight Oct 25, 2011.
By using the polarization plate on the back of an LCD panel, the brightness of the panel is improved by 50%, compared with traditional polarization plates. Also, when the brightness is not changed, power consumption is reduced by about 30%. Teijin DuPont Films Japan is planning to start volume production within a few years, aiming at a sales of ¥10 billion (approx US$131 million) in fiscal 2015.
Only the polarization light that vibrates in a certain direction passes through the new polarization plate, and lights that vibrate in other directions are reflected by the plate to the side of the backlight. When the lights are reflected again on the optical component (reflection film) of the backlight, some of them turn into a polarization light that passes through the plate.
As a result, the use efficiency of light is improved. Traditional polarization plates absorb lights except for the polarization light that vibrates in a certain direction.
This time, Teijin DuPont Films Japan developed two kinds of polyester-based polymer materials and formed multiple layers by using the two materials. The thickness of the polarization plate is about 100μm, but the company did not disclose the number of layers.
The plate can be mass-produced by making a few changes to the existing production facilities for polyester films. Also, it is possible to manufacture the plate for large-screen TVs, Teijin DuPont Films Japan said.
The company will exhibit the newly-developed polarization plate at FPD International 2011, which will take place from Oct 26 to 28, 2011, in Yokohama, Japan.
