[CES] Sony Ericsson Announces 8.7mm-thick Smartphone

Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB (SEMC) announced its new smartphone at the 2011 International CES.

The most distinctive feature of the smartphone, "Xperia arc," is its thickness as thin as 8.7mm. The thickness of the "Xperia X10," the company's existing smartphone, is about 13mm. The Xperia arc is based on Android, Google Inc's software platform.

The Xperia arc comes with a 4.2-inch display using a capacitive touch panel as well as a back-illuminated CMOS sensor with a pixel count of about eight million. It can shoot high-definition (720p) video and output it to, for example, a TV via an HDMI cable.

The operating frequency of its application processor is 1GHz. The Xperia arc has the Mobile Bravia Engine as an image processing engine. The weight of the smartphone is about 117g.
