Samsung Electronics Co Ltd developed a 1.8mm-thick 10.1-inch LCD panel and showcased it at FPD International 2010/Green Device 2010, a trade show taking place in Chiba City, Japan.

The company also exhibited a notebook PC and electronic book reader that are equipped with the panel.

Samsung used a 0.09mm-thick resin substrate though it declined to comment on the type of the substrate. Amorphous silicon TFTs were formed at a temperature of 220°C or below.

"Except for the use of a resin substrate, we used the same manufacturing processes as those used for our existing LCD panels," a staffer of the company said.

Excluding its backlight unit, the panel is 0.44mm in thickness and 28g in weight. The thickness and weight of Samsung's existing LCD panel using a 0.5mm-thick glass substrate are 1.26mm and 130g, respectively (excluding a backlight unit).

The pixel count, brightness and contrast ratio of the panel are 1,024 x 600, 250cd/m2 and 1,000:1. It has a 50% color gamut on NTSC standards. The company plans to commercialize the panel within two or three years.
