Ryobi Group, which runs a bus transportation business in Japan, developed a future-oriented bus to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of its foundation.

The bus, which the company calls "Solarve," is equipped with photovoltaic (PV) panels, LED lamps, a system for viewing the surroundings of the vehicle, etc.

"This is the world's first public bus that is equipped with solar panels," said Sanyo Electric Co Ltd, which supplied the PV panels.

The PV panels are mounted on the roof of the bus. They are made with Sanyo's crystalline silicon PV cells (HIT: heterojunction with intrinsic thin-layer, 420W) and amorphous silicon PV cells (Amorton, 378W). Power generated by using those PV cells is used for LED lamps inside the bus.

Furthermore, the Solarve comes with a system that displays a virtual bird's-eye view of the bus from various viewpoints. The system, which was developed by the Fujitsu Group, was released in May 2010 as an option for Toyota Motor Corp's vehicles. This time, the system was remodeled for use in buses.
