We torn down the USB-connected tuner unit of the "torne," which enables the PlayStation 3 (PS3) to view and record terrestrial digital broadcasts and was released by Sony Computer Entertainment Inc (SCE) March 18, 2010, in Japan.
The tuner unit is made in China, and its circuit board is mounted with two chips, Fujitsu Ltd's "MB86H47A" and DiBcom SA's "DIB8096GPA." The DIB8096GPA is a silicon tuner chip supporting ISDB-T and equipped with an RF circuit for digital terrestrial TV reception and a demodulator circuit for ISDB-T.
Though the function of the MB86H47A is unclear, it seemingly is mounted with ARM Ltd's CPU core. It probably controls the entire tuner, encodes MPEG2-TS image signals output by the DIB8096GPA and sends them to the PS3 via a USB cable.
