Sharp Corp unveiled a solar cell module that it is developing for mobile phones at Green Device 2009, a trade show that took place from Oct 28 to 30, 2009, at Pacifico Yokohama, Yokohama City, Japan.

Sharp exhibited a solar cell module measuring 65.5 x 41 x 0.8mm. The dimensions of the previous model is 67.5 x 41 x 0.8mm. The output was improved from 300mW to 450mW. The company said that it is possible to reduce the thickness to 0.6mm. Though Sharp aims to ship the module within one year, many companies are requesting that it be shipped earlier, the company said.

Also, Sharp enhanced the conversion efficiency of the cell and improved the modularization process though it did not disclose the detailed specifications or manufacturing processes.

"We have to enhance the performance of our solar cells along with the model changes of mobile phones," the company said.

The surface of the new module is black, and no electrode can be seen on it. So, it is possible that the module is equipped with back-contact cells, which have electrodes only on the back side. When electrodes are formed only on the back side, monocrystalline silicon is normally used to expand the lifetime of a device mounted with the cells.
