Touchpanel Laboratories exhibited a resistive touch panel that enables multi-point detection for up to nine points.

While projection capacitive touch panels such as the one used in the iPhone are suitable for the multi-point detection, it is difficult to realize such a function with resistive touch panels. There are some resistive touch panels that support multi-touch operation. But the new touch panel is "probably the only one that can detect as much as nine points," said Yuji Mitani, president and CEO of Touchpanel Laboratories.

The company said it is possible to make the new touch panel in the size ranging from four to 15 inches.

In addition to the multi-touch-enabled resistive touch panel, Touchpanel Laboratories exhibited a surface capacitive touch panel that can be installed on curved surfaces. The applicability to curved surfaces can enhance flexibility in chassis designs.

Furthermore, Touchpanel Laboratories demonstrated a touch panel-based ordering system intended for use in restaurants. It plans to install the system in bars located around the company.

"From now on, we would also like to offer touch panel-based systems like this ordering system," Mitani said.
