Japanese Firm Extends Lifetime of LED Lighting Power Supply to 100,000 Hrs

Kaga Components Co Ltd exhibited a power supply apparatus for LED lighting that has a lifetime of more than 100,000 hours at an exhibition taking place from April 15 to 17, 2009, in Tokyo.

The apparatus is currently under development and was exhibited at a trade show for the first time, the company said. The electrolytic capacitor was removed from the circuit to achieve the lifetime of more than 100,000 hours. At the same time, the power supply circuit was downsized.

LED lights are expected to spread rapidly in the near future because people are increasingly concerned about environmental issues. However, while the lifetime of LEDs, the main components of an LED light, is 30,000 to 40,000 hours, the lifetime of existing power supply apparatuses is as short as 10,000 hours, a spokesperson of Kaga Components said. The short lifetime is attributable to the electrolytic capacitor, which has a lifetime of only 10,000 hours.

"We can not disclose details of the circuit configuration because its patent is pending, but we could remove the electrolytic capacitor by improving the circuit configuration of the switching power supply," Kaga Component said.

Through this improvement, the power supply circuit was also downsized. This power supply apparatus measures 43 x 29 x 8mm.

The apparatus can be used with one to five series-connected LEDs and input powers of 100V and 200V. The maximum output is 20V DC 300mA. It is equipped with an ON/OFF control function and an output short-circuit protection function.

The company offers two types of input/output, an isolated type and a non-isolated type. The price "varies depending on the amount but ranges from ¥500 (approx US$5) to ¥600, which is almost equivalent to that of existing products," Kaga Component said.
