KDDI Announces 7 Handsets including OLED Models
KDDI Corp announced seven new au brand mobile phones as 2008 fall/winter models Oct 27, 2008.
The concept of the 2008 fall/winter models is "ultimate beauty," said Makoto Takahashi, associate senior vice president and general manager of KDDI's Consumer Business Sector. Under this concept, the company will launch "handsets with a focus on image quality," including models equipped with a wide VGA OLED panel.
The company is planning to debut the new models in series from early November 2008.
Two models feature an OLED panel with 800 x 480 (wide VGA) resolution as their main displays. They are Hitachi Ltd's "Wooo Mobile Phone W63H" and Casio Computer Co Ltd's "Exilim Mobile Phone W63CA." They both have a 3.1-inch OLED panel with a contrast ratio of 10,000:1. It displays 100% of the NTSC color gamut.
"It's the same OLED panel as that exhibited at CEATEC Japan 2008 in October 2008," a KDDI spokesperson said (See related article). The panel is a product of Samsung SDI Co Ltd of Korea and employs Clairvoyante Inc's pixel array technology called "PenTile."
The W63H features a variety of image processing technologies in addition to the OLED panel. It has the "Picture Master for Mobile" high quality picture engine, the video technology that is used in Hitachi's "Wooo" flat panel TVs and was improved for use in mobile devices.
The W63H also incorporates "edge enhancer" function, which emphasizes the outlines of images, and a function to provide gamma correction in line with factors such as external light and video signals. It also supports "Nameraka (smooth) Cinema mode," which synthesizes and interpolates images and upconverts 15fps 1seg video signals to 30fps signals.
In addition to the W63H, "Nameraka Cinema mode" is supported by the W63CA, Sharp Corp's "Aquos Mobile Phone W64SH" and Toshiba Corp's "W65T."
The W63CA features a camera with an effective resolution of about 8.09 Mpixels, which KDDI claimed is "the highest resolution among cameras for handsets in Japan," and a 28mm wide-angle lens. It is 17.4mm thick, 1.5mm slimmer than the predecessor "Exilim Mobile Phone W53CA."
The W63CA incorporates the "Exilim Engine for Mobile," an improved image processing engine derived from digital camera technology used in Casio's "Exilim," and supports face detection AF function and blur correction mode.
Aquos Mobile Phone becomes slide handset
The Aquos Mobile Phone W64SH features an LCD panel and a high image quality. Its display is a 3.5-inch LCD panel with 854 x 480 (wide VGA equivalent) resolution. A slide style chassis was employed instead of the "cycloid" style, which previous Aquos Mobile Phones used. With a capacitance type touch sensor on the surface, the handset can be operated while closed.
Other than these models, KDDI announced the W65T specializing in KDDI's "au Smart Sports" sports link service, Kyocera Corp's waterproof "W65K," Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications Japan Inc's "W64S," which supports international roaming using GSM function, and Panasonic Mobile Communications Co Ltd's 12.9mm-thick "W62P."
New colors added to "Full Change phone" lineup
Along with the announcement of the 2008 fall/winter models, KDDI added five new standard colors to the "Full Change Phone re" (manufactured by Sony Ericsson), a series introduced with 2007 summer models. Also, the company added the "IDEE Mobile Phone," "FIFA World Cup Official Mobile Phone," "007 Quantum of Solace Mobile Phone" and "Hokuto no Ken Mobile Phone" to its handsets co-developed with other manufacturers.
