Exhibitions related to "regional WiMAX" services drew attention from visitors at "Japan Cable TV & Telecommunications Show 2008," which took place at Tokyo Big Sight from June 19 to 21, 2008.
Regional WiMAX is a WiMAX technology using 10MHz in the 2.5GHz band, which Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) has allotted for communication services within municipalities. The MIC has already stopped accepting applications from 42 operators across Japan and issued licenses to a number of them.
According to Japan Radio Co Ltd (JRC), "Full-scale regional WiMAX services are expected to start as early as October 2008, if everything goes smoothly." Regional WiMAX services are likely to be launched ahead of mobile WiMAX services, which are slated to start nationwide in or after February 2009.
Companies including JRC and Fujikura Ltd have announced their entry to the market as vendors of compatible wireless devices. Fujikura employs a strategy of partnering with KT Corp, which is offering a WiBro service in Korea, and directly applying KT's diverse wireless devices and service for use in Japan's regional WiMAX.
Fujikura employed modules produced by InfoMark Co Ltd of Korea for WiMAX terminals. "KT also introduced InfoMark's modules to us," Fujikura said.
Although frequency bands allotted to WiMAX services differ in Korea and Japan, "Korean terminals operate well enough in Japan's 2.5GHz band as well," Fujikura said. "We are expecting to acquire Japan's certificate for an adoptable technology in the near future."
