[TEXPO] SMK Develops Remote Control with no Battery

SMK Corp prototyped a TV remote control that eliminates the need for a battery and exhibited it at the company's exhibition "TEXPO 2008," which is taking place in Shinagawa, Tokyo from June 4, 2008.

The remote control is shaped like a water gun. The channels, volume control and On/Off power switch can be controlled by operating the trigger. According to the company, the remote control is only a prototype and its schedule for commercialization is yet to be decided.

Energy saving technologies are currently being highlighted in connection with global warming. The latest product is a technical proposal only SMK, a leading remote control manufacturer, would be able to make.

The remote control incorporates an electromagnetic induction coil, high speed rotation gears, a power circuit, an infrared light emitting unit, etc. When the user pulls the trigger on the remote control, the coil will rotate at a high speed by means of the built-in gears.

The electromagnetic induction of the coil generates power to perform smoothing and other processings in the power circuit before turning on the LED. The coil momentarily generates a current of approximately 20-30mA, which can transmit signals between several meters via infrared light.

The prototype is dubbed the "No Battery Remote Control." When the user pulls the trigger, the remote control changes the channel. Two consecutive pulls will turn the TV on or off. Volume control can be performed by pulling the trigger while pushing another button at the same time.

"A current of 20-30mA is required to extend the LED transmission range to a certain length," said a demonstrator from SMK, explaining the reason why it takes considerable strength to pull the trigger. It is possible to improve the usability by further optimizing the light emitting unit and the power circuit.
