[ESEC] Macnica Exhibits UWB Transmission System w/ Coaxial Cable

Macnica Inc exhibited "UWB over Coax," a UWB transmission system using a coaxial cable, at ESEC 2008, which runs from May 14, 2008, at Tokyo Big Sight.

With the use of Sigma Designs Inc's UWB transmission chipset "Windeo," Macnica transmitted an HDTV video signal over a coaxial cable with a length of about 100m, which was used as a transmission medium between devices. The effective throughput is approximately 120Mbps, according to Macnica.

The demonstration was presented as one exemplary application for Sigma Designs' media processor. With the adoption of the latest transmission system, Macnica expects to use a coaxial cable in combination with wireless transmission to send/receive HDTV video data at home. Sigma Designs has also given a similar demonstration in the US.

UWB over Coax is presently being standardized as a transmission method for high resolution moving pictures, etc, by an IEEE1394 promotion group "1394TA." The development of similar technologies are promoted by Pulse~LINK Inc, Tzero Technologies Inc and other companies in the US.

Meanwhile, patent litigation has been filed between Pulse~LINK and Tzero.
