DisplaySearch of the US has announced results of its survey on the global market for OLED panels in the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2007 and the full-year.
In the Q4 of 2007, Sony Corp drew interest by releasing its "XEL-1" OLED TV (See related article), but Samsung SDI Co Ltd of Korea, which entered the full-scale production of active matrix OLED panels, exhibited greater growth, DisplaySearch said.
Total shipments of OLED panels were down 9% year-on-year (YoY) to 20.1868 million units in Q4. Sales rose 13% YoY to US$158.8 million.
By manufacturer, Samsung SDI took the first place on a sales basis. Its sales skyrocketed 205% YoY to US$79.4 million. Its share expanded to 50.0%, more than double that of RiTdisplay Corp of Taiwan, which was ranked second.
RiTdisplay's sales increased 15% YoY to US$30.3 million. RiTdisplay, however, maintained its top position in the amount of shipments. Its shipments in the Q4 were 6.6 million units, compared with Samsung SDI's 4.9 million units.
Pioneer Corp took the third position on both sales and shipments bases. Its sales grew 11% YoY to US$23.7 million. Sony, which shipped 2,000 units of 11-inch panels for the XEL-1 in December 2007, will ship 6,000 units in the Q1 of 2008, DisplaySearch forecast.

Active matrix panels are boosting their ratio in the overall sales. The ratio increased from the 9.7% in the Q3 of 2007 to 41% in the Q4. DisplaySearch predicted the ratio will rise to 55.6% in the Q1 of 2008.
This prediction is based on Korean LG Display Co Ltd's entry to the active matrix panel market, as well as sustainable increases expected for active matrix panel production at Sony, Chi Mei EL Corp of Taiwan and Samsung SDI, the company said.
Active matrix panels are incorporated in products announced by Nokia Corp of Finland, Samsung Electronics Co Ltd of Korea, LG Electronics Inc of Korea and Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB of the UK in the Q4 of 2007, and production is growing favorably in the small- and medium-sized panel market.
OLED panel shipments climbed 8% YoY to 74.7 million units in 2007 full-year with sales rising 6% YoY to US$493.9 million.

OLED panel sales are expected to reach the record high of US$204.1 million in Q1 of 2008. DisplaySearch estimated active matrix panel shipments of 3.1 million units for the Q1.
