Frost & Sullivan, a US marketing firm, announced the results of research on the OLED panel market in 2013.

The company reported that the OLED panel industry earned US$475 million in 2006 and estimated this will reach US$1.4 billion in 2013.

An OLED panel does not require a backlight because it is a light emitting display. It is reportedly brighter, thinner and less power consuming than an LCD panel. OLED panels are already used in some portable media players and mobile phones. They are also expected to be used in flat-screen TVs, flexible displays, white lighting equipment, etc.

Although OLED panels have advantages over LCD panels, their widespread adoption has been decelerated due to the declining prices of LCD panels, according to Frost & Sullivan. The company pointed out that it is necessary to increase the yield and reduce the cost of AMOLED panels in order to expand the OLED panel market. In addition, the industry needs to enhance efficiency and product life, the company said.
