[TMS] Audi Mounts Plug-in Hybrid on Concept Car "Metroproject Quattro"
Audi AG of Germany mounted a plug-in-hybrid on the concept car "metroproject quattro" exhibited at the 40th Tokyo Motor Show.
The 1.4-L direct injection turbo engine "TF-SI" drives the front wheels, while the electric motor drives the rear wheels, making it a 4-wheel drive vehicle. It is equipped with a Li-ion secondary battery that can be charged from a plug in a house.
The electric motor can power the vehicle for 100km max by itself. The transmission is "S Tronic," an automated manual transmission (AMT) equipped with paddle shift function.
The 110kW (150PS)/5500rpm engine is an improved version of 1.4-L TFSI engine with max output of 92kW (125PS) adopted by "A3." The max torque is 240N·m/1600-4000rpm.
The motor has an output of 30kW (41PS) and a torque of 200N·m. The max speed is 210km/h, while it is 100km/h when powered by motor only. It takes 7.8 seconds to reach 100km/h from standstill.
The functions such as motor assist during acceleration, regenerative braking and idling stop in addition to the motor-only drive realized the fuel efficiency of 20.4km/L and the average CO2 emission of 112g/km. If the battery level reaches 20% or less during the motor-only driving, the engine starts to run.
The front suspension is MacPherson-type, while the rear suspension is four-ling-type. The vehicle is mounted with 'Magnetic ride," a magneto-rheological damper.
The "drive select" function allows the users to switch between "dynamic" mode and "efficiency" mode to change characteristics of the engine and the shift as well as damping force of Magnetic ride. When the engine is started, it operates in efficiency mode to keep the fuel consumption and the emission low.
The motor does not run in conjunction with the engine only to increase the torque. The navigation detects the difference in height along the road and calculates in advance downhills where the energy is regenerated and uphills where additional energy is necessary, so that the motor is used efficiently to reduce fuel consumption.
In efficiency mode, alarms that suggest stopping the compressors that consume a lot of energy, closing the windows, etc are indicated on the display. The dynamic mode enables a sporty driving through adjustments such as reduction of the viscosity of Magnetic ride and improvement of acceleration by simultaneous operation of the engine and the motor.
