Hitachi Maxell, Ltd. has initiated shipments of the "DP-201," a new digital pen product based on Anoto technology. The DP-201 is an interface device which swiftly converts analog information such as handwritten characters, illustrations and drawings into digital data without difficulty. Making the most of the company's expertise in optics and circuit technology, Hitachi Maxell integrated optical components into a compact module and reduced the size of the electronic components and circuit board. As a result, the company succeeded in reducing the width by about 15% and the weight by about 20%, compared to the previous "DP-101U/B." The digital pen is equipped with both USB and Bluetooth interfaces for connecting to PCs and mobile products. The battery charger, which also functions as a USB interface, is a cradle type so users can insert the pen with ease as if using a pen stand.

The product's key specifications are as follows. Weight is 30 g and the dimensions are 157 x 21 x 18 mm (with the cap on). It supports USB1.1 (2.0 is also available) and Bluetooth 1.2 standards for data transmission. Operating time is more than 2 hours in continuous writing mode, while standby time extends that to more than 10 hours with the cap off. It includes a Li-ion secondary battery, which is operational at temperature between 0 and 40°C.
