ZMP Inc announced June 27, 2014, that it will test an autonomous car on public roads in Nagoya City, Japan, within fiscal 2014.
The project will be carried out in collaboration with Aisan Technology Co Ltd (Nagoya City) and the Graduate School of Information Science, Nagoya University through 2020, financed by New Aichi Creation Research and Development Grant
The test will be conducted by using an about 2.2km-long bus-only road of Prefectural Road 15 in Nagoya City. The vehicle to be tested is "RoboCar HV," which ZMP developed based on Toyota Motor Corp's Prius hybrid electric vehicle (HEV).
The vehicle uses a high-precision map that Aisan Technology developed with an MMS (mobile mapping system). And it estimates its position by using an infrared laser radar device and the "SLAM (simultaneous localization and mapping)" technology. ZMP aims to autonomously drive a vehicle at a speed of 40km/h (approx 24.9 mph) on the bus-only road within fiscal 2014.
