International Conference on Renewable Energy Planned in Tokyo
The Grand Renewable Energy 2014 Organizing Committee (general chair: Kenji Yamaji, professor emeritus at the University of Tokyo) had a press conference June 27, 2014, and announced an overview of the "Grand Renewable Energy 2014 International Conference and Exhibition," an event that will take place from July 27 to Aug 1, 2014, in Tokyo.
At the event, engineers will gather from both Japanese and overseas organizations in the aim of improving advanced technologies and announce/discuss the results of researches and developments. Since 2006, the event has been organized quadrennially. And it will be the third one this year.
Sessions will take place for each of 12 fields such as photovoltaic (PV) power, wind power and biomass, and the latest technological results will be announced in each session. In addition to major renewable energies, the 12 fields include policies for promoting the use of renewable energy, connection to power grid and storage and other energy-related systems such as "Policy & Integrated Concept," "Energy Network & Power Electronics" and "Hydrogen & Fuel Cell."
Including sessions using posters, more than 900 announcements (from 60 countries) are scheduled to be made. The number of announcements will be 550 from Japan, 40 from South Korea, 30 from each of China and the UK, about 20 from each of Thailand, the US and Germany, etc. By topic, wind power, ocean energy and PV power account for 200, 150 and 120 announcements, respectively.
At Grand Renewable Energy 2014, based on the lessons from the Great East Japan Earthquake and the Fukushima nuclear accident, reconstruction projects will be announced to the world. Announcements about the floating wind power plant located off the coast of Fukushima Prefecture, the researches on a low-cost solar cell and hydrogen storage system being developed by Fukushima Renewable Energy Institute, AIST (FREA), etc are expected to gather attention.
In addition, "Fukushima Work Session" will be organized to explain the joint project that has been pursued by four universities in Fukushima and Japan's National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) in the aim of achieving the prefecture's goal of realizing "100% renewable energy in 2040."

"As the total capacity of solar power generation facilities certified under the feed-in tariff (FIT) scheme rapidly increased to 60,000,000kW or more, the reduction of national burden and the stabilization of power grid will be major challenges," Yamaji said. "The results announced by organizations based in various countries will greatly contribute to such domestic policies on renewable energy and discussions on measures to be taken for power grids."
"To make use of a large amount of renewable energy, it is effective to actively use renewable energy suited to each region such as PV power, geothermal power and biomass, establish networks and reduce fluctuating load on power grids," said Kosuke Kurokawa, co-general chairperson of the committee and specially-appointed professor at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, emphasizing the importance of discussing a wide variety of renewable energies at an international conference.
FREA has also been engaged in the research of networking PV generation facilities and other renewable energy-based power generation facilities. And this will probably discussed at an international conference in the future.
