Seiko Epson Corp announced portable ink-jet printers equipped with a rechargeable battery June 26, 2014.

The expected retail price of the compact printers, "PX-S05W" and "PX-S05B," is ¥25,000-30,000 (approx US$246-295). Seiko Epson will start shipment in late September 2014. The size and mass of the printers are 309 x 154 x 61mm (122 x 61 x 24 inches) and about 1.6kg (3.5 pounds), respectively.

"It is smaller and lighter than any similar product of our competitor," the company said.

Seiko Epson expects that the new printers will be used by salespeople and maintenance people whose work outside their companies as well as in stores and offices where there is no space for a printer. Also, the company considers that the printers will be stored in desks when they are not in use.

"We aimed at a size that enables to store a printer in an office desk drawer without making it oblique," it said.

To realize the small size and light weight, Seiko Epson reduced the size of the roller for feeding paper, split a printed circuit board (PCB) into several parts and densely mounted them, used an aluminum frame for the main body, etc.

As interfaces, the printers feature a USB port and support IEEE802.11b/g/n. Also, they come with the Wi-Fi Direct function so that they can be directly operated with a tablet computer, smartphone, etc without a wireless LAN access point. They are equipped with a 1.44-inch color LCD panel.
