The Tokyo metropolitan government announced June 6, 2014, a plan to increase the ratio of the amount of renewable energy to the amount of energy consumed for its sewage system operations to 20% or more by fiscal 2024.

Based on the "Smart Plan 2014" basic energy plan, the government will introduce megawatt-class solar power generation facilities by using space in sewage facilities. It will install solar systems at six facilities including the Morigasaki and Minamitama water purification plants in fiscal 2014-2015, the Kiyose and Asakawa water purification plants and other plants in fiscal 2016-2018 and more water purification plants by fiscal 2024.
