SPN to Install 2.13MW Solar System on Roof of Nissan's Plant
Solar Power Network (SPN) Inc announced April 16, 2014, that it will rent the roof of Nissan Motor Kyushu Co Ltd's building, install a 2.13MW mega (large-scale) solar power plant on it and sell solar electricity to Kyushu Electric Power Co Inc.
SPN is a Canada-based company that runs solar power generation businesses by renting roofs. The building is located in Shinhama-chou, Kanda-machi, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. The construction and operation of the plant are scheduled to begin by December 2014 and in early 2015, respectively.
Nissan Motor Kyushu is one of Nissan Motor Co Ltd's auto assembly plants. And Nissan Motor is considering renting the roofs of other plants for solar power generation businesses.
The total project cost is about ¥500 million (approx US$4.9 million). The Japanese subsidiary of SPN (Minato Ward, Tokyo) will be a power producer for the plant. The tilt angle of the plant's solar panels will be 5°, which is the same as the angle of panels SPN installs in Canada.
SPN has not yet selected a solar panel manufacturer. PV inverters are expected to be supplied by Toshiba Mitsubishi-Electric Industrial Systems Corp (TMEIC) or ABB Ltd. For the construction of the plant, SPN tied up with Kokusai Land & Development Co Ltd of Japan Asia Group Ltd.

SPN was founded in Toronto in 2009. The company has been developing solar power generation systems on the roofs of about 600 commercial, industrial and public facilities located mainly in Canada. The total output capacity of those systems is about 300MW.
In Japan, SPN received orders for a 3MW solar power plant at a sewage treatment facility in Fuji City, Shizuoka Prefecture, and a 1.4MW plant in Noda City, Chiba Prefecture. And it plans to actively expand its solar power generation business using rooftops in Japan.
"On a global scale, in the first phase, power generation systems will be less dependent on coal and nuclear power and more dependent on dispersed power sources such as renewable energy-based power generation facilities," said Peter Goodman, president and CEO of SPN. "In the second phase, more electricity generated by using dispersed power sources will be consumed in house, reducing the dependence on power grids."
"In the third phase, stand-alone energy systems will be completed with storage battery systems," he said. "A solar power system set up on the roof of a building located near an electricity consumer is best suited as an energy system in the second phase."
