Solar, Wind Energy Expected to Power Entire Island
The governments of Okinawa Prefecture and Miyakojima City have been engaged in the "Verification Project for 100% Energy Self-sufficiency With Renewable Energy Sources in Kurima-jima, Miyakojima City."
The project is aimed at using only renewable energy sources to supply all the electricity used in Kurima-jima (island), Miyakojima City, Japan.
The governments have been constructing systems necessary for the verification since fiscal 2011 ending March 31, 2012, in the prefecture's "Project for Establishment of Base for Smart Energy Island" and started operations in January 2014. The verification project will end in March 2015.
For the verification project, solar power generation systems and storage batteries are installed at utility customers' facilities to establish a system that allows to use renewable energy in the communities in Kurima-jima. The governments aim to combine data not only from the solar power generation systems but from existing wind power generation systems in the island and verify that it is possible to use renewable energy sources to generate enough electricity to be consumed in the entire island.
The total capacity of the solar power generation systems installed in the island is about 380kW. The capacities of the storage batteries range from 100k to 176kWh. The solar panels, PV inverters and storage batteries were manufactured by Kaneka Corp, Omron Corp and Toshiba Corp, respectively.
