Kyocera to Launch Li-ion Battery for Stand-alone Solar System

Kyocera Corp announced Feb 17, 2014, that it will commercialize its "lithium-ion power storage system for public/industrial use" and that Kyocera Solar Corp will release the system March 3, 2014.

The system is expected to be combined with a stand-alone solar power generation system that can be used at the time of disaster. There is no manufacturer's suggested retail price. Kyocera aims to sell 500 units in three years.

The capacity of the power storage system is 12.0kWh. Equipped with a high-performance lithium-ion (Li-ion) rechargeable battery having a cycle life of 8,000 cycles, it can continuously supply electricity for a long period of time. The new system is expected to be used at public and industrial facilities that require stable power supply even at the time of disaster.

Both in normal and emergency situations, it is possible to select one of the six operation modes including "peak-shift mode" and "stand-alone operation mode" in accordance with the user's purpose and other conditions. Moreover, the storage battery unit is eligible for the 10-year warranty offered by Kyocera, which is one of the longest-term warranties in the industry. The company will sell the storage battery system along with a solar power generation system in the market for public/industrial facilities.

Since the Great East Japan Earthquake, there has been a trend of supporting the introduction of renewable energy and rechargeable batteries, which are necessary as emergency power sources, due to the reconstruction of afflicted areas and the urgent demand for power. For example, the "Fund Project for Promoting the Introduction of Renewable Energy, etc (Green New Deal Fund System)" was introduced.

Especially, increasing numbers of companies and public facilities such as government buildings, community centers and schools are introducing industrial power storage systems in preparation for large-scale natural disasters.
