The government of Shiga Prefecture, Kyocera Corp and Kyocera TCL Solar LLC announced Dec 16, 2013, that they will conclude a basic agreement on the construction of a mega-solar (large-scale solar) power plant (output power: about 8.3MW) in Yabasekihantou, Kusatsu City, Shiga Prefecture, Japan.
The plant will be the largest-scale solar power plant in the prefecture. Kyocera TCL Solar (Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo), a joint venture that was formed by Kyocera and Century Tokyo Leasing Corp in August 2012, will be the power producer. Kyocera designs plans for the entire mega-solar project while Century Tokyo Leasing will purchase the plant after completion, lease it to Kyocera TCL Solar and arrange financing.
The design and construction of the mega-solar plant are performed by Kyocera Communication Systems Co Ltd (Kyoto City). And Kyocera Solar Corp (Kyoto City) is responsible for the provision and maintenance of power generation systems.
The Yabasekihantou island, which will be the construction site, is reclaimed land owned by the government of Shiga Prefecture. The government called for a business operator that installs, operates and maintains solar power generation facilities from the public in October 2013 in the aim of effectively using idle land on the island. And Kyocera and Kyocera TCL Solar, which filed an application together, were selected.
The government, Kyocera and Kyocera TCL Solar expect that the agreement will be concluded in March 2014, the construction will begin in August and power generation will start in September. They intend to sell electricity for 20 years after starting the operation of the plant.
About 34,000 solar panels manufactured by Kyocera are planned to be installed in an area of about 99,970m2 to produce about 8,500,000kWH of electricity per year, which is equivalent to the amount of power consumed by 2,000 households annually.
For the mega-solar plant, an emergency power supply will be installed for use at the time of disaster. Also, boards will be set up in the Yabasekihantou Park to provide information on solar power generation as well as solar-powered lamps and clock. And an observation deck will be built for environmental education.
