[PS4 Teardown (4)] Simple Main Board
Continued from [PS4 Teardown (3)] Large Light-guiding Plate
There were a small number of components mounted on the main board. And only GDDR5 memory chips attracted out attention. The number of the chips was eight. Near the memory chips, several multilayer ceramic capacitors were located. We thought that the main processor was placed on the back of the capacitors.
There was an area covered by a shield. We could not look inside it. But there seemed to be an HDMI transceiver chip under the shield because it was near the HDMI port.
Then, we took out the main board and found that a larger number of components were mounted on the other side of the board. Still, it looked simple enough. The largest component on the side was the main processor, which is equipped with a CPU and GPU. It measured approximately 19 x 19mm.
On the surface of the processor, we found characters such as "SONY COMPUTER ENTERTAINMENT INC.," "CXD90026G" (probably the model number), "DG1000FGF84HT," "WC55430130202," "DUFFUSED IN TAIWAN" and "MADE IN MALAYSIA." So, the front- and back-end processes were probably carried out in Taiwan and Malaysia, respectively.
Eight GDDR5 memory chips were located as if they surround the main processor. So, a total of 16 GDDR5 memory chips were mounted on the main board. Because the capacity of the PS4's GDDR5 memory is 8 Gbytes, the capacity of each chip is 512 Mbytes. We moved on to check other components.
