MDI-SB Solar Co Ltd built a 3MW mega-solar (large-scale solar) power plant in Uenohara City, Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan, and started power generation at the plant.
MDI-SB Solar (Nishi Ward, Osaka City) is a joint venture of Nippon Steel & Sumikin Bussan Corp and Mitsuboshi Diamond Industrial (MDI) Co Ltd (Settsu City, Osaka). Nippon Steel & Sumikin Bussan announced that a ceremony to celebrate the start of the operation took place Nov 7, 2013.
Nippon Steel & Sumikin Bussan was formed by the consolidation of Nippon Steel Trading Co Ltd and Sumikin Bussan Corp Oct 1, 2013. MDI-SB Solar was established in October 2012 by MDI and Sumikin Bussan and is currently 51% owned by MDI and 49% by Nippon Steel & Sumikin Bussan.
As for mega-solar plants built by MDI-SB Solar, the company started power generation at a 2MW solar power plant in Tatebayashi City, Gunma Prefecture, in May 2013. Also, the mega-solar plants built by companies affiliated with Sumikin Bussan (present Nippon Steel & Sumikin Bussan) include the 1MW plant built by Kemuning Sumikin Bussan in Malaysia, 24MW plant by Rojana Energy in Thailand and 1.8MW plant by Exedy SB Hyogo Co Ltd in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan.
The latest mega-solar plant was built on a site measuring about 130,000m2. It is expected to generate about 4 million kWh of electricity per year. Kinden Corp (Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo) provided EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) services for the plant. Its solar panel and PV inverter were manufactured by China-based Renesola and Toshiba Mitsubishi-Electric Industrial Systems Corp (TMEIC), respectively.
For the mounting system of the plant, the "SuperDyma" corrosion-resistant plated steel plate developed by Nippon Steel Corp was employed. The mounting system was manufactured by Nippon Steel & Sumikin Metal Products (NSMP) Co Ltd. The fence surrounding the plant was provided by Nikken Fence & Metal Corp, a subsidiary of NSMP.
The protective film on the surface of the SuperDyma contains aluminum, magnesium and silicon and is finer than that of a conventional zinc-plated steel plate. Also, the SuperDyma has a four times higher corrosion resistance than a conventional zinc-plated steel plate. Therefore, its product life is as long as 25 years even when it is used in a coastal area where salt causes problems.
