NSG Develops Highly Antibacterial, Antiviral Glass
Nippon Sheet Glass (NSG) Co Ltd exhibited two products using glass that decomposes bacteria and viruses attached to its surface at Hospex Japan 2013 for the first time.
The two products using the glass, "Virus Clean," are the "multi-layer glass type" and "laminated glass type." Hospex Japan is a trade show on devices for hospital and care facilities. It took place from Oct 23 to 25, 2013, in Tokyo.
NSG confirmed that the new glass is highly antibacterial and antiviral against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, flu viruses, etc. It can be used for many kinds of buildings including food and pharmaceutical factories and public facilities in addition to hospital and care facilities.
The Virus Clean is made by coating a glass plate with a photocatalyst (titanium oxide) layer and copper-based compound layer. But the copper-based compound layer, which is the front-most layer, is coated in a stripe pattern.
As a result, bacteria and viruses are directly attached to either of the two layers. And 99% of them are decomposed by the photocatalyst, which decomposes organic substances, or the copper-based compound, which is antibacterial and antiviral.
Though both of the layers take effect under the light of a fluorescent lamp, LED lamp, etc, only the copper-based compound layer has effect in a dark place.
The multi-layer glass type consists of two glass plates, between which there is an air space. For example, the Virus Clean is used as a glass plate facing the inside of the room, and a normal float plate glass is used as a plate facing the outside.
On the other hand, the laminated glass type consists of two glass outer layers and one middle layer such as Virus Clean/middle layer/Virus Clean and Virus Clean/middle layer/float plate glass.
The multi-layer glass type, which has high heat insulation properties, prevents dew condensation and saves energy, is targeted at windows in patients' rooms, etc. And the laminated glass type, which prevents broken glass from scattering or dropping, can be used as a partition board in newborn nurseries, etc.
