SEL Unveils Flexible Li-ion Battery Cell

Semiconductor Energy Laboratory (SEL) Co Ltd developed a flexible lithium-ion (Li-ion) rechargeable battery and exhibited it at FPD International 2013, which is taking place from Oct 23 to 25, 2013, in Yokohama, Japan.

"We have long been engaged in the development of the battery, but this is the first time that we have shown it," the company said. "We thought that there may be a demand for the battery because wearable devices such as smart watches are drawing attention and decided to exhibit it."

SEL also showed a bangle-like device using the battery.

The exhibited battery measured 50 x 40mm and had a thickness of 1.6mm. Its capacity was 300mAh.

"Its properties do not deteriorate even if it is bent to a curvature radius of 40mm 10,000 times," the company said.

To realize the flexibility, SEL made improvements to electrolyte material and lamination method.
