Panasonic Shows 79GHz-band Milliwave Radar for Pedestrian Detection
Panasonic Corp showed a milliwave radar that uses a frequency band of 79GHz and can individually detect vehicles, pedestrians and bicycles.
By installing the radar in an intersection, etc, it can be used for sensors that prevent car accidents. The radar was exhibited at the 20th ITS World Congress Tokyo 2013, which runs from Oct 14 to 18, 2013, in Tokyo.
The milliwave radar uses electronic scanning and pulse code modulation technologies. With Panasonic's own coding technology, it can scan with a data refresh rate of 0.1 second or faster and detect objects. Specifically, the radar can separate and detect vehicles, low-speed pedestrians and bicycles 40m away from it with a distance accuracy of 20cm.
Moreover, Panasonic realized simultaneous detection by controlling the interference of the milliwave radar even when multiple transmitters are used. As a result, the company achieved a wide viewing angle of 120°, which can cover main intersections.
In regard to the research and development of the new milliwave radar, Panasonic applied for 27 patents in Japan and 14 patents outside Japan.
