Sony Corp and Panasonic Corp reached a basic agreement on the co-development of a next-generation standard for business-use optical disc.

The two companies aim to develop an optical disc with a capacity of 300 Gbytes or higher. For the future, they will discuss the specifications of the disc, development items, etc.

Optical discs are suited for storing contents for a long term. It is because they are resistant to temperature and humidity changes, dust, water, etc and ensure compatibility among different formats.

The two companies have been engaged in the development of optical disc products based on the Blu-ray Disc format. And they agreed that it is necessary to increase storage capacity per optical disc to respond to the needs in the market for archive devices.
