Ichiko Industries Ltd will release a rearview monitor mirror equipped with an event data recorder (EDR) April 12, 2013.

The mirror, the "Safety Vision STR-100," is targeted at all kinds of commercial vehicles. It does not require any manual operation when the car is running, and it does not block the driver's view.

The STR-100 can be easily installed by replacing a rearview mirror with its LCD screen. Its price is ¥144,900 (approx US$1,455).

Data recorded by the EDR is stored in a 16-Gbyte SD card (a 32-Gbyte SD card is available as an option) and transferred to a PC in an office. Separately-sold software for viewing the recorded data needs to be installed in the PC. The price of the software has not been decided yet. The data can be used for analyzing the causes of accidents and preventing the recurrence of dangerous driving.

The STR-100 constantly records videos from up to four cameras including the camera embedded in the screen. It synchronizes and shows information about date, time, acceleration, vehicle speed, location (on a map), routes and brake and winker operations. It is possible to sort the data by any of those elements.

When two cameras are used, the STR-100 can constantly record about 10 hours of VGA video at a frame rate of 15fps, about 13 hours of VGA video at 10fps, about 34 hours of QVGA video at 10fps or about 60 hours of QVGA video at 5fps. And those recording modes allow to record about 33, 43, 116 and 63 events, respectively. The angle of the embedded camera's view is 113° in the horizontal direction and 82° in the vertical direction.
