New Compression Paddle Reduces Pain in Mammography
Fujifilm Corp will release a compression paddle with a new structure for reducing the fear of pain caused by mammography April 11, 2013, via Fujifilm Medical Co Ltd.
The compression paddle, "FS (Fit Sweet) Compression Paddle," is an option for Fujifilm Medical's "Amulet" series of mammography machines and will be sold to their users for a price of ¥800,000 (approx US$8,615).
At the time of mammography, breasts are compressed so that they do not move, causing pain and discomfort to the patient. When a conventional compression paddle is used, more pressure is applied to the thickest parts of the breasts than to the other parts, sometimes causing strong pain to the thickest parts.
On the other hand, the new compression paddle bends along the breasts when the paddle touches them. Also, with three slits on the front side and right and left lateral sides of the paddle, the pressure is dispersed.
When Fujifilm conducted an experiment with 10 women, seven of them said that they felt less pain and were willing to use the FS Compression Paddle next time. And a mammography technician who participated in the experiment said that, with the new paddle, it became easier to position the breasts.
