High-durability Dye Improves Efficiency of Dye-sensitized Solar Cells

Fujifilm Corp developed a high-durability dye for dye-sensitized solar cells.

At nano tech 2013, a trade show that runs from Jan 30 to Feb 1, 2013, in Tokyo, it announced the results of a test in which a solar cell using the dye was prototyped.

The Black Dye, a dye that is commonly used for dye-sensitized solar cells, has a problem of low durability. On the other hand, the conversion efficiency of a solar cell using the newly-developed dye lowered by less than 10% after it was exposed to a temperature of 85°C and a humidity of 85% for 1,000 hours.

The dye can improve not only durability but also conversion efficiency. Fujifilm increased current value by improving light absorption on the long-wavelength side and voltage value by reducing dark current.

In fact, the conversion efficiency of a dye-sensitized solar cell that Sharp Corp prototyped by using the new dye reached 11.9%, which is a world record. The area, short-circuit current, open voltage and fill factor of the cell are 1.00cm2, 22.58mA, 0.744V and 71.2%, respectively. The conversion efficiency was measured at Japan's National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST).

Fujifilm will continue to improve the dye so that it absorbs more light on the long-wavelength side to further increase the conversion efficiency.
