New Nanocomposite Porous Material Has High Chemical Resistance, Mechanical Strength
Japan's National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) and Unitika Ltd co-developed a technology to manufacture a nanocomposite porous material that consists of polyimide and silica and has high flexibility and heat resistance.
Specifically, it became possible to manufacture a nanocomposite porous material having micropores of several tens of nanometers (high porosity) by dissolving carbon dioxide (CO2) with a high pressure in a solution of a mixture of a polyamide acid (precursor used as a material for polyimide) and silicon alkoxide (material for silica) and, then, reducing the pressure.
The porous material features high heat and chemical resistances and a high mechanical strength. Also, when made thin, it can be bent. Therefore, the material is expected to be used as an insulating material or low-dielectric constant material that can be used at a temperature of several hundred degrees C unlike existing polymer materials.
