Nikkei Electronics Teardown Squad continued to examine the main components of Apple Inc's iPad mini. After checking the touch panel, which presides over the device's interface, we turned our attention to its LCD panel, which is the face of the device.

The screen size and pixel count of the iPad mini's LCD panel are 7.9 inches and 1,024 x 768, respectively. Its resolution is 163ppi. Probably, many people hesitate to buy the iPad mini because it is not equipped with the "Retina Display," which is used for Apple's other products.

Who supplies this commonly-used LCD panel? We carefully checked the area surrounding the panel and found that the flexible printed circuit (FPC) board of the panel was printed with "LG Display." So, the panel must be provided by LG Display Co Ltd.

According to some market research firms including IHS iSuppli Corp, the LCD panel is provided by LG Display and AU Optronics (AUO) Corp. We wondered if a different manufacturer will supply an LCD panel when the iPad mini comes with the Retina Display in the future.

There was a printed circuit board (PCB) on the back of the lCD panel. And two large chips were mounted on the PCB. They were Samsung Electronics Co Ltd's "W1232 S6TNMR1X01" and Silicon Mitus Inc's "SM4031 DA1232 SMCP043." Based on the portfolios of the chips, the chip manufactured by Samsung is estimated to be used for driving the LCD panel, and the chip manufactured by Silicon Mitus is estimated to be a power supply control chip for the LCD panel.

We finished checking the display part (the touch panel and the LCD panel) and started to examine the main board.
