Japan Display Inc developed a 2.3-inch LCD panel whose resolution is as high as 651ppi and pixel count is 1,280 x 800.

The company claims that it is a direct-view-type display whose resolution is the highest level in the world. The pixel pitch of the panel is 39μm.

The high resolution was realized by using low-temperature polysilicon TFTs as driver elements. The resolution is about two times higher than that of Japan Display's panel being mass-produced for smartphones. The panel can display characters that are as smooth as printed characters and do not have jaggies and can provide realistic sensations equivalent to those of gravure pictures, the company said.

Japan Display will announce the details of the new technology in a symposium at the 2012 SID International Symposium, Seminar & Exhibition (SID 2012).
