[CES] Toshiba Demos Wirelessly-powered Tablet Computer
Toshiba Corp exhibited a prototype of a waterproof tablet computer that can be wirelessly powered at the 2012 International CES.
At the trade show, the tablet was being wirelessly powered in an aquarium. Toshiba prototyped the tablet by using its "Regza Tablet" equipped with a 10.1-inch LCD display.
"We prototyped it for displaying our technologies," the company said. "We are not planning to commercialize it at this point."
For wireless power transmission, Toshiba employed the magnetic resonance method, which has a relatively long range of transmission. The distance between the prototyped tablet computer and a power-transmitting device was several centimeters. Though the company did not disclose the efficiency of the power transmission, it said that the efficiency is not high.
This time, Toshiba removed the lithium-ion (Li-ion) rechargeable battery from the tablet and directly powered it.
