Canon Inc announced the PowerShot G1 X, a compact digital camera equipped with a large-size CMOS image sensor, at the 2012 International CES, which is taking place from Jan 10 to 13, 2012.

The size of the CMOS image sensor is 18.7 x 14.4mm. The company plans to release the camera in February 2012 in the US at a price of US$799.99.

Canon sells the "PowerShot G" series of high-end compact cameras. Though the G1 X has an external design similar to the designs of the other cameras in the series, its image sensor is totally different from those of the others. For example, the PowerShot G12, which was released in October 2010, is equipped with a 1/1.7-inch CCD sensor whose pixel count is 10 million.

On the other hand, the G1 X comes with 1.5-inch (18.7 x 14.4mm) 14.3-Mpixel CMOS image sensor, which is larger than the sensors used for the Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras of Olympus Corp and Panasonic Corp (17.3 x 13.0mm).

The G1 X is equipped with an optical 4x zoom lens whose focal length is equivalent to 28-112mm (35mm equivalent). Its F value is 2.8-5.8. The lens consists of 11 elements in 10 groups, and its optical system includes the "Ultra high refractive index Aspherical (UA)" lens, both sides of which are aspherical. It has a six-blade iris.

The sensitivity of the camera is ISO100-12800. The "Digic 5" was employed for its image processing engine. It features the "PureColor II VA LCD," which is a movable (vari-angle) 3-inch LCD display with a pixel count of 920,000, and an optical viewfinder that moves along with zooming.

The dimensions of the G1 X are 116.7 x 80.5 x 64.7mm, and its mass is about 534g including a battery and a memory card.
