Huawei Technologies Co Ltd announced Jan 9, 2012 (US time), what it claims is the world's slimmest smartphone at a press conference that took place prior to the 2012 International CES, which runs from Jan 10 to 13, 2012.

The smartphone, "Ascend P1 S," is as slim as 6.68mm excluding its antenna and camera located on the back of the phone. The company plans to launch it in April 2012.

The Ascend P1 S is equipped with the 4.3-inch model (960 x 540 pixels) of the "Super AMOLED" touch-sensitive OLED panel and uses the "Gorilla Glass," which is a strengthened glass developed by Corning Inc. Its application processor is Texas Instruments Inc's "OMAP 4460" dual-core processor (operating frequency: 1.5GHz). And its operating system is Android 4.0 (code name: Ice Cream Sandwich).

The capacity of the smartphone's lithium-ion (Li-ion) rechargeable battery is 1,670mAh. The phone has a back-illuminated CMOS image sensor with a pixel count of about eight million on its back and is capable of shooting 1080p high-definition video.

The Ascend P1 S measures 6.68 x 64.8 x 129mm and weighs about 130g.

"We have realized the world's slimmest smartphone by improving molding method, slimming internal components and employing a high-strength metal frame," said Richard Yu, chief strategy & marketing officer of Huawei Technologies and chairman of Huawei Device Co Ltd.

This time, Huawei also announced the "Ascend P1." It has the same basic specifications as the Ascend P1 S. But it is slightly thicker (7.69mm) because it uses a frame made of a different material.

For the P1 S, a high-strength metal was employed to realize enough durability for its slim body, the company said. Because the P1 is about 1mm thicker than the P1 S, the high-strength metal was not necessary.

Except for its thickness, the dimensions of the P1 are the same as those of the P1 S. And the weight of the P1 is about 110g, which is 20g lighter than the P1 S.
