Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, LG Display Co Ltd and AU Optronics (AUO) Corp showcased see-through displays at FPD International 2011.

AUO exhibited both see-through LCD and OLED displays while Samsung and LG Display showed see-through LCD displays. The three companies had demonstrations of their displays with actual applications in mind.

AUO showed a 65-inch 1,920 x 1,080-pixel LCD panel and a 6-inch 400 x 300-pixel OLED panel. Inside the pixels of the LCD panel, there are transparent areas that do not have color filters. As a result, the transmittance of the panel can be increased to 15% or higher. At the trade show, the company demonstrated the LCD panel used for the front side of a vending machine.

As for the OLED panel, AUO used transparent materials for both its positive and negative electrodes so that light emitted from OLEDs goes to both the positive- and negative-electrode sides. The transmittance and brightness of the panel are 36% and 400cd/m2, respectively.

Samsung exhibited a 46-inch 1,920 x 1,080-pixel LCD panel and a 22-inch 1,366 x 768-pixel LCD panel. It demonstrated the 46-inch panel on the glass door of a refrigerator and the 22-inch panel as a see-through TV panel. On the other hand, LG Display demonstrated a 26-inch 1,920 x 1,080 LCD panel applied to a glass showcase.
