Toshiba Mobile Display (TMD) Co Ltd announced Oct 20, 2011, that it has developed a 6.1-inch LCD panel featuring a resolution as high as 498ppi.

As a direct-view-type display, it has the world's highest level of resolution, the company said. The enhanced resolution enables to display video whose quality is equivalent to that of a photographic image. The LCD panel is targeted at tablet computers and other mobile machines.

The pixel count, contrast ratio and view angle of the new panel are 2,560 x 1,600, 1,000:1 and 176° or broader (in both the vertical and horizontal directions, 10:1 or higher in terms of contrast ratio), respectively. It has a 61% color gamut on NTSC standards and can display 16,777,216 colors. It uses low-temperature polycrystalline silicon TFTs as driver elements.

TMD plans to exhibit the new panel at FPD International 2011, which will take place from Oct 26 to 28, 2011, in Yokohama, Japan.
