[FPDI] TMD Develops Wide View-angle LCD Panel for Mobiles

Toshiba Mobile Display (TMD) Co Ltd announced an LCD panel that features a new display mode to widen view angle Oct 18, 2011.

The company plans to begin volume production of the panel, "Soludina," within fiscal 2011 for use in smartphones, tablet computers, etc.

For the newly-developed mode, TMD used a technology that expresses gradation by horizontally applying an electric field to liquid crystal molecules inside cells to drive the molecules. Though this technology is similar to the one used for IPS (in-plane switching) and FFS (fringe field switching), the pixel structures of their electrodes, etc are different, the company said.

This time, TMD prototyped 4.3- and 7-inch LCD panels. The pixel count and resolution of the 4.3-inch model are 720 x 1,280 and 342ppi, and those of the 7-inch model are 800 x 1,280 and 217ppi.

Their contrast ratio and view angle are 800:1 and 176° or higher (in both the vertical and horizontal directions), respectively. Their have a 71% color gamut on NTSC standards and can display 16,777,216 colors.

TMD plans to exhibit the new LCD panel at FPD International 2011, which will take place from Oct 26 to 28, 2011, in Yokohama, Japan.
