[CEATEC] Sony Unveils 4k2k Projector for Home Use
Sony Corp announced a home-use projector capable of projecting 4,096 x 2,160-pixel (4k2k) video Oct 3, 2011.
The projector, "VPL-VW1000ES," will be released in late December 2011 at a price of ¥1.68 million (approx US$21,909).
Commenting on the market release of the 4k2k projector, Shoji Nemoto, SVP of Sony's Professional Solutions Group, said, "The shifts from SD video to HD video and from HD video to 4k2k video are inevitable. Sony's first home-use 4k2k product will be the projector." He is planning to sell the projector in the global market, considering the Olympic Games and the World Cup as business opportunities.
The newly-developed projector measures 520 x 200 x 640mm and weighs about 20kg. It can display 4k2k video on a screen with a size of 60 to 300 inches. Its maximum brightness is 2,000lm, and its maximum contrast ratio is 1,000,000:1. Its operating frequency is 120Hz. Also, the projector can show 4k2k 3D video supporting the "active shutter method."
To realize the home-use 4k2k projector, Sony developed the "4k Display Device SXRD (Silicon X-tal (Crystal) Reflective Display)," a reflective LCD panel, as a display element. Its size and pixel pitch are 0.74 inches and 4μm, respectively. The pixel pitch of the former product is 7μm.
This time, Sony formed driver elements on a silicon (Si) substrate by using a 0.18μm MOS process. And it reduced the circuit area of the driver part by optimizing the liquid crystal operation to lower pixel electrode voltage.
Furthermore, by planarizing the surface of the Si driver board, Sony uniformized the thickness of the LCD layer, reduced brightness unevenness and enhanced contrast ratio of video. The aperture ratio of the reflective LCD panel is 90%. Its display mode is the VA mode. And it uses an inorganic oriented film.
The projector is equipped with the "CXD4736GB" super-resolution up-converting chip, which generates 4k2k video from full-HD (1,920 x 1,080-pixel) video signals. As in the case of Sony's Bravia series of LCD TVs, it used the "database-type multi-frame super resolution" technology. This time, the company changed the pattern classification procedure of the technology to the "leaning type" to display video with a higher resolution.
