Samsung Electronics Co Ltd announced the "Galaxy S II HD LTE," a smartphone featuring a high-resolution (1,280 x 720-pixel) OLED panel called "720HD."
This time, the company commercialized an OLED panel with a pixel density higher than 300ppi for the first time. The pixel density, screen size and screen aspect ratio of the smartphone are 316ppi, 4.65 inches and 16:9, respectively.
In regard to the resolutions of smartphone displays, LCD panels have been taking the lead. For example, the IPS LCD panel of Apple Inc's "iPhone 4" has a screen size of 3.5 inches, pixel count of 960 x 640 (2VGA) and resolution of 326ppi. On the other hand, the OLED panel of the "Galaxy S II," which is Samsung's existing smartphone, has a screen size of 4 inches, pixel count of 800 x 480 (WVGA) and resolution of 233ppi.
The resolution of the Galaxy S II HD LTE's OLED panel is much higher than that of the former product's OLED panel and equivalent to the resolutions of smartphones' LCD panels. Many people in the FPD industry predicted that a 720HD-comaptible smartphone panel would debut in 2012, but Samsung realized it a year earlier.
