Sony Corp will release a hospital-use monitor equipped with a 25-inch OLED panel Nov 9, 2011.

The company expects that the monitor, "PVM-2551MD," will be used as a main monitor for endoscopic instruments and operations. Though there is no manufacturer's suggested retail price, its expected retail is about ¥980,000 (approx US$12,785).

Sony considers that the contrast characteristics, video response and color reproducibility of OLED panels are suited for medical use. For example, their response speed is faster than that of LCD panels, enabling to follow the fast movements of surgical instruments such as clamps and display vivid images with less afterimages.

The OLED panel has the "Super Top Emission" structure, which was developed by Sony. Because light is extracted from the top surface of the panel, it is possible to realize a high brightness. The resolution of the panel is full HD (1,920 x 1,080 pixels).

The monitor features the "User Memory" function, which records up to 20 combinations of the user's favorite color, contrast, brightness, etc, a function to mirror-reverse an image and other functions to adjust images depending on needs. Furthermore, Sony employed a rounded design by using a flat screen and bezel so that dust does not attach to the monitor.
