[IFA 2011] Toshiba to Launch 55-inch 4k2k Naked-eye 3D TV in December

Toshiba Corp plans to commercialize a large-screen 3D LCD TV whose 3D images can be viewed without using special glasses within 2011.

The TV will come with a 55-inch 4k2k (3,840 x 2,160-pixel) LCD panel. The company announced the TV at a press conference that took place prior to IFA 2011, the largest consumer electronics trade show in Europe, which runs from Sept 2, 2011, in Berlin, Germany.

The TV is scheduled to be launched in December 2011 in Europe at an expected price of about 8,000 euro (approximately US$11,259). It will also be released in Japan with different specifications by March 2012.

In Europe, the product name of the TV is "55ZL2." Toshiba defines the naked-eye 3D TV as the top-end product of its 3D TVs, planning to use it to enhance the company's brand value in the European TV market. The 3D display viewable with the naked eye was realized by using the lenticular method, in which lenticular lenses are arrayed on the front side of the LCD panel to generate parallax between left- and right-eye images. The number of its viewpoints is nine.

It is possible to switch between 3D and normal modes. In the normal mode, the TV can be used for displaying normal video or images on the 4k2k screen. Full-HD (1,920 x 1,080-pixel) video is up-converted to 4k2k video by using multiple super-resolution technologies that enhance apparent video resolution. This processing was realized by the "Cevo Engine," an image processor developed by Toshiba.

The "Face Tracking" function of the TV determines the location of the viewer with a camera mounted on the front side and adjusts the optimal viewpoint. This function can be used by pressing a button on the remote control.

At the trade show, Toshiba will show 3D video by using a prototype, video taken by using JVC Kenwood Corp's 4k2k camcorder in real time and pictures with a pixel count of 8 million.
