Samsung Electronics Co Ltd developed a notebook PC equipped with a 14-inch see-through LCD panel and exhibited it at FPD China 2011, which is taking place from March 15 to 17, 2011, in Shanghai, China.

The company showcased a prototype that has a similar concept at trade shows in and outside Japan (See related article).

The pixel count of the LCD panel is 1,680 x 1,080. A white LED unit is installed on each of the four sides of the panel. Outside light is also used as backlight. The panel is a VA mode type, and its transmittance is 14-15%, according to Samsung.

Moreover, Samsung exhibited 22-inch and 46-inch see-through LCD panels, which are expected to be used for window glasses and signage (advertisement).

"We are planning to commercialize them for one of those applications in or after the third quarter of 2011 (from July to September 2011)," a Samsung staffer said.
